The value of distance education in the modern world. The essence and features of distance learning The role of distance learning

Today, the Internet has firmly entered our lives. Modern education cannot be imagined without computers and the Internet. Most modern schoolchildren actively use computers and the Internet in their lives, education, and more and more often there is a desire to study remotely. Modern development information and educational technologies and, undoubtedly, recent changes in Russian legislation have made it possible for any Russian citizen, whether a child or an adult, to master the program secondary school, to gain additional knowledge that goes beyond the school curriculum remotely. For this, there is no need to change the place of residence, the usual rhythm of life. The advantage of distance learning is the ability to choose an individual schedule in accordance with the capabilities and abilities of the student, the optimal pace of mastering the material. You can be anywhere in the world, as long as you have access to the Internet.

The use of distance learning technologies helps to reduce the cost of training, teaching a large number of students at the same time, improving the quality of education through the use of modern technical means, and creating a common educational environment.

In what cases does distance learning come to the fore? First of all, when it comes to people with handicapped health. Often, in such cases, the only way to get access to quality education. Also, when educational institutions are closed for quarantine, or in case of adverse weather conditions. IN Lately distance learning is gaining momentum, because such courses can be taught by a native speaker.

How can distance learning work? It can take place in the form of chat classes - this is learning carried out using technologies such as "chat". "Chat classes" take place in parallel, that is, all chat participants can have synchronous access to the chat where the lesson is being taught. Within the framework of such "remote training centers"There is usually a chat school, where training is conducted in special chat rooms, which are conducted by remote teachers.

The second form of distance learning is web-based classes (also called web conferences, video conferences) - remote lessons, conferences, workshops, seminars and other similar forms of training conducted through computers, telecommunications and other Internet capabilities. For web classes, special web forums are created, where users, or teachers, can leave notes on a specific topic. Participate and discuss issues, topics and communicate through the website, with dedicated software provided. Web forums differ from chat classes in that they take longer and are asynchronous for teacher-student interaction. A distance learning site can be a tool not only for conducting webinars and video conferences, but also contain text materials, video recordings of lessons, video conferences, as well as a distance learning program.

A growing number of educational institutions, companies, government organizations introduce distance learning technologies into the educational process. Today, distance learning is experiencing a period of rapid development. Distance learning technologies penetrate deeper and deeper into our lives, as it is a democratic, simple and free learning system.

The possibility of obtaining higher education through open and distance learning is seen as an effective step towards the democratization of higher education, as well as a significant contribution to its development, especially in the modernization and provision of a variety of forms of education. To provide this opportunity, new systems and ways of transferring knowledge and skills are needed. Higher education institutions can become centers of lifelong learning, accessible to all and always.

In the "World Declaration on higher education for the 21st century: approaches and practical measures" emphasizes that higher education institutions should take advantage of the benefits and opportunities of new information and communication technologies. This will allow them to maintain the quality of education at the proper level and meet high requirements educational standards and deliver good results in practice. Open and distance learning: trends, policy and strategy considerations. UNESCO. 2007

Distance learning is the creation of a learning environment that includes computer and information tools, where communication between students and the teacher occurs through telecommunication channels.

There are a number of technological means for conducting distance learning in universities:

  • 1. Computer techologies learning. This technology is already firmly entrenched in the educational process, usually the educational material in this technology is presented in the form computer programs or systems, The main component of this educational material is "hypertext", and contains links to such objects as: any text, graphic illustration, animation, audio fragment, video fragment or any program. Also, the most important part of the curriculum is a block of questions and exercises to consolidate theoretical and practical knowledge. Such programs may be distributed to students on floppy disks, CDs, and other media, or distributed over the Internet.
  • 2. Internet technologies. These include:
    • -- World Wide Web ("World Wide Web") - a system of organizing information on the Internet, based on hypertext. This technology makes it possible to place on the Internet hypertext study guides, tests for control, including those with multimedia elements, and provides interactive access to educational material directly on a computer network;
    • - FTP (File Transfer Protocol) -- file transfer protocol. This is a standard network service that allows you to transfer files from one computer to another. Allows students to take any files (textbooks, application programs, computer textbooks, computer tests, etc.) from the computer of the educational institution to their personal computer;

Distance learning offers many benefits for both students and distance learning institutions (Figure 1.5.). Distance learning overcomes such problems as distance and time, which are barriers in traditional education.

The benefits for students are: accessibility, flexibility, adult-friendlyness and program quality.

One of the most important advantages of distance learning is access to education. There are several reasons why a student is unable to access education:

  • - living far from an educational institution, for example, there is no college or university on a small island; or in big country there may be many people living in rural areas far from the nearest college or university;
  • - inability to travel to the center, even if the educational institution is not very far away. For example, a student is unable to use public transport; students may have family obligations that prevent them from leaving their homes;
  • - inability to study at the set time (for employees of organizations);
  • - physical disability (disabled people, people with hearing problems);

Benefits of distance learning

Distance learning aims to solve all these problems through:

  • * providing the student with an opportunity to receive an education (textbooks, audio cassettes, telephone or network communications);
  • * providing students with the opportunity to study at a time that suits them, i.e. when they are free.

Distance learning includes lower costs per student than traditional learning and a large number of students can study on a fixed budget. One of the limiting factors in the expansion of education in developing countries is the lack of teachers. Distance learning is an effective way to train and improve the skills of teachers.

Another advantage distance education is flexibility. It offers flexibility in place and time of study, allowing students to support work and family obligations while studying.

Adaptation to the adult population implies that, in lectures in educational institutions, students tend to be passive recipients of a large amount of information, often unrelated to their own personal experience. Distance learning offers a variety of approaches, basing learning on a wide range of activities, using personal experience, as well as encouraging the use of learned skills in everyday life. If curricula and teaching methods are better tailored to students, students become more motivated. This results in high acceptance rates, high graduation rates, and higher exam passing rates.

Quality is increased as a result of the (mandatory) complex process that is used to develop a distance education course. In traditional teaching, teachers develop their own lessons, and they are very limited in time. The preparation of distance education courses is a team effort, involving specialists in the development of the curriculum, teaching materials, resources, and so on. Most project materials are reviewed by a team of specialists, and some materials are tested before use. These processes make it possible to create educational materials very High Quality. They are then used in the distance education system by experienced distance learning teachers. (Such materials can also be used in traditional education, raising its quality).

The state sees various advantages in distance education in the form of cost reduction. The cost effectiveness of DOs remains the main reason for its use. There are two main ways to evaluate the cost effectiveness of distance learning: cost per student and cost per graduate compared to a traditional educational institution.

According to a study of the existing DL programs in the world, it was determined that out of 62 programs, in 51 (82%) the costs per 1 student were lower compared to the traditional training program. Out of 18 DL programs, in 17 programs (94%) the cost per graduate was lower than in the traditional program. In eight programs, the cost per graduate was half or less than half that of the traditional program. Rumble. G.: The Costs and Costing of Networked Learning, Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks , Vol. 5. 2006

The benefits for employers are the combination of work and study. Many distance education students study to improve their knowledge and skills in relation to their current employment. The largest such group is teachers. Distance learning turned out to be very effective method professional development of teachers without having to leave their classrooms. Most employers are attracted to distance learning because the cost of distance education is less than the cost of traditional education.

Along with the advantages, DO has the following disadvantages:

  • 1. Distance learning requires motivation from the student.
  • 2. Distance learning does not provide direct access to a teacher.
  • 3. Distance learning - isolated. Although the student is in a virtual classroom full of students, the interaction dynamics change.
  • 4. Distance learning requires constant and reliable access to technology.
  • 5. The distance learning system does not always offer all the required courses online. Students seeking a degree do not always have the opportunity to take all subjects online.

The role of distance learning in modern education

Nowadays, in order to keep up with the constantly changing information technologies, it is necessary to constantly learn. One form of education is distance learning. What is it?

Distance learning is a way of implementing the learning process based on the use of modern information and telecommunication technologies that allow learning at a distance without direct, personal contact between the teacher and the student.

In previous years, children who could not attend school were educated at home with the help of parents or visiting teachers. Today, the development of modern technology allows those who wish to receive education at home to do this with convenience and comfort. Internet connection and appropriate technical devices are all that is needed to start distance learning.

There are many reasons why a child cannot study in educational institutions. Here are some of them:

    the family often changes its place of residence, moving from city to city;

    the student additionally goes in for sports and simply cannot attend school according to the standard schedule;

    the child finds it difficult to master academic disciplines;

    the student is significantly ahead of his peers in terms of the pace of assimilation of the material;

    conflict with the teacher does not allow the child to calmly master the program and get good grades. In many of these cases, distance learning is a great alternative to going to school.

Distance education certainly has its advantages over traditional forms learning:

Higher level adaptability basic training and students' abilities, health, place of residence, and, accordingly, the best opportunities to accelerate the process of obtaining education and improving the quality of education;

Improving the quality of the educational process by focusing on the use of automated teaching and testing systems;

Availability for students of "cross" information, since they have the opportunity, using computer networks, to refer to its alternative sources;

Increasing the creative and intellectual potential of students through self-organization, the pursuit of knowledge, the ability to interact with computer technology and independently make responsible decisions;

Pronounced practicality of teaching (students can communicate directly with a particular teacher and ask questions about what interests them most).

Thus, the introduction of a distance learning system in educational organizations will solve the following problems:

Education of children with special educational needs, as well as frequently ill children;

Organization of remote control of students' knowledge;

Work with gifted children (individual additional tasks of a higher level);

Providing assistance to students in the independent development of certain topics or sections of the school course;

Providing assistance in in-depth / profile study of subjects of interest to students.

At the same time, the introduction of distance learning technologies into the educational process is accompanied by a number of problems and difficulties:

regulatory and legal (payment scheme for course authors and teachers conducting classes using DOT);

pedagogical (training of new authors of distance courses and distance teachers);

technical and ergonomic (availability of high-quality access to the Internet);

psychophysiological (lack of working time for conducting distance courses during working hours, a large workload of the teacher with current work);

observance of the balance between accessibility and quality of education;

the need to adapt the teacher to the distance form pedagogical activity in terms of his technical, methodological and psychological skills and abilities;

increasing learning motivation;

creation of a favorable psychological climate during training;

observance of norms and rules of network etiquette and norms of pedagogical ethics.

To eliminate problems in teaching with the use of distance technologies, it is important to take into account that the motivation and interest of the student play an important role in the virtual space. Even the best and most advanced technologies, such as information and psychological-pedagogical ones, without optimizing the educational process, can have the opposite effect, therefore, for high-quality and affordable education, it is not enough just to introduce a distance education system into the learning process, a creative approach to business is needed, the creation of an established system of organization learning activities teachers and students. After all, learning with the use of distance learning technologies is just a specific form of organization of learning, requiring a change in the foundations of the traditional educational process and a revision of the principles and methods in pedagogical activity.

THE ROLE OF DISTANCE LEARNING IN THE MODERN EDUCATIONAL PROCESS

Volkova T.I., computer science teacher

Lyceum №273 named after L.Yu. Gladysheva

The role of distance learning in modern educational process hard to overestimate. Modern information technologies allow teaching students at a distance at a high level. The student, as it were, is next to the teacher, if we are talking about communicating via Skype or watching a video lesson, he can ask the teacher questions. This training solves many questions that teachers have: “What to do with a student who missed one or two weeks of classes and drops out of the educational process? How to replenish his knowledge?

Today we are talking about the fact that we live in an information society. Yes it is. And no one doubts it anymore. Three criteria for the development of the information society can be distinguished:

    availability of computers

    level of development of computer networks

    the number of the population employed in the information sphere, which uses information and communication technologies in their daily activities.

Today, almost every family has a computer, and sometimes even none. The word "Internet" no longer seems like a fairy tale. In a house where there is a computer, there is also an Internet connection. More than 80% of the country's population in its professional activity use information and communication technologies.

The process of informatization is being widely introduced into the educational sphere. Look at our schools. They have interactive whiteboards, computers for subject teachers, computer classes that have access to the World Wide Web. Internet services allow you to quickly transfer information at a distance. This can be used by a teacher when working with a student who, for one reason or another, cannot attend a traditional school.

Distance learning - this is the interaction of a teacher and a student with each other at a distance, reflecting all the inherent learning process component and implemented by means of Internet technologies. Thus, it can be said thatRemote education is education realized through distance learning.

Interest in distance learning has been formed for a long time. Let's remember correspondence form training in universities, when assignments were sent by mail and test papers. And now, in the era of the rapid development of computer technology, telecommunication technologies, distance learning is one of the forms of the educational process.

The advantage of distance learning independent work a student who can study at a convenient time for himself, according to an individual schedule. At the same time, the student must have a set of special teaching aids with him and the opportunity to contact the teacher (by phone, e-mail,Skype). Thus, the distance learning environment is characterized by the fact that the student is distant from the teacher in space and (or) in time, at the same time they have the opportunity to maintain a dialogue at any time with the help of modern means communications.

Distance learning has the following character traits:

    flexibility implies the ability to study at a convenient time, in a convenient place and pace, while the student is given an unregulated period of time to master the discipline;

    modularity provides an opportunity to form a curriculum from a set of independent training modules that meets individual or group needs, to form an individual educational trajectory;

    coverage provides simultaneous access to many sources educational information (electronic libraries, databases, etc.) of a large number of students, communication via the Internet with each other and the teacher;

    cost-effectiveness implies the effective use of training areas, technical means, Vehicle; concentrated and unified presentation of educational information and multi-access to it reduces the cost of training specialists;

    manufacturability means the use in the educational process of the latest achievements of information and telecommunication technologies that contribute to the advancement of a person in the global post-industrial information space, as well as student-oriented pedagogical technologies;

    social equality provides equal opportunities for education regardless of place of residence, health status, elitism and material security of students;

    internationality involves the export and import of world achievements in the educational services market, the ability to use world information resources;

    the new role of the teacher, who must organize and coordinate the educational process, constantly improve the courses he teaches, improve creative activity and qualifications in line with innovations and innovations in the field of ICT.

In my practice, I was faced with the need to use distance learning. The student with whom I had to work was in another country for family reasons and was transferred to family education. Being a computer science teacher, I immediately decided that we would communicate with him using the Internet resources. We exchanged email addresses, and the work went according to plan: he received additional theoretical material from me (in addition to textbooks, which he prudently took with him), completed assignments, tests and tests. The performance of the tasks was checked and, as necessary, consultations were held on the issues that arose.

Experience has shown that distance learning is different from traditional forms of learning. These differences are:

    in a greater volume of independent activity of the student;

    in a more conscious level of motivation of the consumer of educational services;

    in creating comfortable conditions for studying the material;

    the need for competent computer skills, both for the teacher and the student;

    availability of interactive communication;

    in the use of various forms of educational and methodological support.

Distance learning for several years allowed the student to successfully pass all the annual final works every year, and in the graduating class, to pass the Unified State Examination in Informatics and ICT.

Advanced technologies, which are the basis of distance learning, make education open and accessible to students, regardless of their place of residence. The actual problem of schoolchildren missing classes as a result of illness does not exist today. system solution. A student who misses one or two weeks of classes drops out of the educational process, and he can replenish knowledge through independent mastering of the missed material. This problem can also be solved with the help of distance learning.

Distance learning is only developing today, looking for its own forms and methods. Currently, distance courses have already been created and are successfully developing on the Internet, which provide versatile knowledge in various subject areas.

Here it is also necessary to say that modern teachers should be ready for this form of training: to master the skills of working on the Internet.

Today we can say with confidence that in modern conditions of widespread introduction of information and communication technologies in the field of education, distance learning is the future. And it is absolutely clear and obvious that distance learning technologies need to be developed further.

And I agree with the sayingthat distance learning is learning for everyone.

An article that briefly describes the advantages of using such a method as distance learning along with traditional forms of education. The opportunities provided by the use of distance learning help to improve the quality of knowledge in the educational team, as well as create the most comfortable environment for learning.

The role of distance learning in the modern educational process

In recent years, the use of modern technical means has become a popular phenomenon in education. Informational educational technologies have received intensive development and are increasingly being used in the everyday educational process along with traditional forms of education. Among them, a special place is occupied by distance learning, recognized as one of the key areas of the main educational programs UNESCO "Education for all", "Education through life", "Education without borders".
Distance learning is a method organization of the learning process, which allows through modern information and telecommunication technologies to carry out learning at a distance without direct contact between the teacher and the student.
Essence t
distance learning technologiesin the fact that training and control over the assimilation of the material is carried out through the Internet computer network, namely, on-line and off-line technologies.

In my opinion, this method is most effective when carrying out projects and research work, as well as when working with gifted children, who, through this method, get the opportunity to receive additional tasks and tasks of increased difficulty. It is also effective when working with disabled children who are home-schooled.

In my work, I use distance learning through Email. Between me (the teacher) and the students, a distribution of additional tasks was organized: creative (for example, essays), control (tests), exciting tasks (crossword puzzles, puzzles) aimed at developing motivation to study the subject.

Distance learning technologies, from my point of view, help in pedagogical activity in the following way. First, an additional educational space is being formed. Secondly, students get the opportunity to develop such skills as tolerance, critical thinking, readiness to seek a compromise solution and accept someone else's point of view. Thirdly, due to the fact that children find themselves in an environment that is closer and more familiar to them (I mean virtual), they develop cognitive activity and independence. Fourthly, the student can choose an individual pace of studying the material (can perform more difficult tasks, can perform additional creative tasks). In case of illness, the student always has the opportunity to participate in the educational process and keep up with the program. Thus, in addition to obtaining the necessary knowledge, the child maintains his mental and mental balance.

Most parents support the use of distance learning. This method allows them to prevent the appearance of “tails” in studies, the backlog of the child in the program in case of missed classes.

Information technology plays an important role not only in the classroom, but also in extracurricular activities, to support the social life of the class, greater team building.

In my opinion, distance learning is of great importance in preparing for the OGE, the USE.

Summarizing, I would like to note that distance learning solves not only educational problems,

but also the psychological problems of students, expands the communicative sphere of students and teachers

gov, contributes to the development of motivation for learning.
