Head of postgraduate department

vocational education

Every year, the number of state-funded places in postgraduate studies at universities in the Ulyanovsk region is getting smaller. This all-Russian trend leads to the fact that the cost of postgraduate education is growing rapidly. Everything goes to the fact that soon science may well become the lot of the elite stratum of society, ready to pay for their own scientific title, and it will be almost impossible for people "from the street" to become a graduate student.

Why is it so difficult to become a graduate student today and how much knowledge costs, the correspondent of the site found out.

It's no secret that the number of state-funded places in graduate school is declining more and more noticeably every year. For example, last year at USU there were 63 state-funded places for graduate students, and this year there are already 45. Other universities have similar changes. In the oldest Pedagogical University Volga region - UlGPU named after I.N. Ulyanov - only 9 people will be able to enter graduate school free of charge this year, which is almost half as much as in the past. At the Polytechnic University, the situation is no better. There, we were confirmed the reduction of budget places and noticed that, in general, humanitarian specialties are being reduced in all universities. University employees shrug their shoulders: “It’s hard to explain, we are presented with a fact. This is a nationwide trend."

The scholarship of a postgraduate student who has chosen a humanitarian profile of study does not exceed 3,000 rubles today. For comparison - the publication of an article in the journal VAK (a necessary condition for learning) on average, according to one of the major portals dedicated to science, costs 900 rubles per page. The minimum number of pages in an article is five. Simple calculations show that the publication of only one article will cost at least 4,500 rubles, which is already 1.5 times more than a postgraduate scholarship.

Yes, my scholarship is about 2700 rubles. I can’t attend couples, so there are problems with passing certification. But somehow it was impossible to live on 2700 rubles. Scholarships can be withdrawn for poor progress, but I'm not afraid of that. I am glad that I got at least the only state-funded place in my specialty, - says one of the graduate students of UlGPU, who asked not to be named.

Postgraduate students of other specialties, more applied (some natural sciences and exact), receive a scholarship twice as high - about 6 thousand rubles a month. At the same time, the cost of living in the Ulyanovsk region is set at 6,010 rubles. Naturally, most graduate students are forced to devote most of their time not to science, but to earning money.

The cost of postgraduate education is also on the rise. So, for example, this year you can study at the graduate school of UlSTU for a fee of 55 to 150 thousand rubles a year. Price list of pedagogical and Ulyanovsk state universities has not yet been updated, but in the same UlGPU last year it was necessary to pay from 70 to 80 thousand rubles for full-time education. In these universities, the cost of studying for new graduate students will be announced before June 1.

To imagine an adult of 23-25 years old who is ready to give such money for scientific education, while fulfilling all the requirements of training, is not an easy task. At the same time, one must be aware that the salaries of university teachers are far from sky-high. To unlearn three years (and sometimes four) in full-time graduate school, in order to then receive a salary below the average for the region, can hardly be called a dream of a modern Russian. With this in mind, we can assume that soon not only those who want to study, but those who can afford it will go into science.
