Finding out your level of English is a headache for everyone who made the decision to take courses. Hurt! Why? Because there is still a share of subjective assessment when testing your English in courses. In addition, language proficiency is the possession of four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. And these skills can be developed in different ways. And if it is enough to pass a grammar test to check grammar, then spoken English - fluency, pronunciation, language richness - is assessed by the teacher based on his knowledge and experience.

In addition, all tests to determine the level of English are with multiple choice answers. And this means that the test will not give an accurate result, since there is always the opportunity to guess the correct answer.

Therefore, tests to determine the level of English should contain as many questions as possible - this reduces the likelihood of incorrectly determining the level. But do you have the patience to pass a long test? How about a few?

For beginners to learn English, this process usually seems vague and uncertain. But the methodology of teaching English is so perfect that it is enough to determine the level of a person, after which you can build training in such a way as to achieve the desired result in the shortest possible time. To begin with, it is useful to learn about what levels exist and at which of them you want to master the language.

Level Zero, Full Beginner

This applies only to those who know absolutely nothing about the language, even the alphabet. If you studied English at school or, then this is definitely not about you. Given the prevalence of the English language, it is difficult to find an adult who would have an absolute zero level.

Elementary Knowledge, 1 Elementary

Unfortunately, this is the level of those who studied English at school. A person knows a few simple words, has a vague idea of grammar, but he cannot speak. With a certain diligence and sociability, possession of elementary knowledge will allow you to communicate with the seller in the store or the staff at the hotel, but nothing more.

Advanced Elementary, 2 Upper-Elementary

A person at this level can speak using the simplest grammatical structures. Vocabulary is limited to topics that have been studied in the classroom, but this is already enough to keep the conversation going on a familiar topic. It's hard to express your opinion though. You can communicate at this level if the interlocutor speaks slowly and supplements his words with gestures.

Slightly below average, 3 Pre-Intermediate

With this level of proficiency, a person can carry on a conversation on a familiar topic with ease. He speaks with almost no mistakes, the pace of speech is already quite decent. But when communicating with native speakers, a difficult situation often arises. An English-speaking person decides that his interlocutor speaks well, and begins to communicate in “normal mode”, and here a person with a Pre-Intermediate level realizes that he still understands little, usually feeling awkward at the same time.

Intermediate, 4 Intermediate

This is good knowledge. A person can speak quite fluently on everyday topics, knows grammar, can explain himself in writing. Vocabulary is still, as a rule, low. This level allows you to take international tests IELTS for 4.5-5.5 points, and TOEFL - for 80-85.

Advanced Intermediate, 5-6 Upper-Intermediate

Upon reaching this level, a person can already enter a university or work in a foreign company if you do not need to communicate too much with clients. The test results are as follows: IELTS 5.5-6.5, TOEFL 100.

Advanced. 7-9 Advanced

This is already excellent knowledge of the language, and further differences in everyday communication cannot be noticed. Can work in any position

As a rule, it is not enough to determine the level of knowledge of English online. Your restless curiosity must be eager to know what your result means. Below you can read what this or that level of English means. Ready? Then go ahead!

    • 60-70 points. If you scored from 60 to 70 points, then you have reached the level Advanced (Advanced) in my English teaching. This is a very high level, which means that you can easily communicate in English in almost any situation. You perfectly understand almost any text, enjoy watching films and series in English, sometimes even forgetting what language they were watched in, calmly read books in the original. Although the Advanced level is undoubtedly a great achievement, it is not the highest level of English proficiency. There is also a level Proficiency (Professional), which covers absolutely all areas of knowledge and makes it possible to use English as a native language. Therefore, do not give up, the goal is already close!
    • 48-59 points indicates a level called Upper-intermediate (Above average). As a rule, this level is indicated as the minimum for admission to a university and employment in an international company. Knowledge of English at this level implies that you have a good vocabulary to express your thoughts, opinions on some issue or problem. You can competently build sentences using complex structures. You understand most of the English songs you hear on the radio, usually without regard to slang and various dialects. If we compare this level with human age, then in English you enter the phase of an adult of 20-23 years old, your English seems to be independent, but not always confident and has not acquired life wisdom. You think in English, albeit sometimes with errors.
    • 36-47 points is the level intermediate (Average). At this level, a person already has a good understanding of the system of grammatical tenses and constructions, knows the words of the main everyday topics. Willingly enters into a conversation, can express his thoughts in most everyday situations. He can already watch films in English, but at the same time he experiences obvious difficulties due to the lack of a passive vocabulary, that is, words that a person can recognize in a text or conversation and translate. With the Intermediate level, you can already travel safely. You will definitely understand the locals of non-English speaking countries and will be able to start a lively conversation with them.
    • 24-35 points. Level Pre-Intermediate (Below the average) says that your period of "childhood" in English is over. You have already seen some of the many complex grammatical constructions with your own eyes, and you can even apply some of them. You have already learned a couple of three cumbersome creepy words and in all likelihood you can pick up synonyms for some expressions. Orientation in simple language situations (in a restaurant, hotel, shop, airport) does not shock you, because you can already cope with it. You can read the first adapted books “in the original”, but sometimes you still experience horror before unadapted films. Pre-intermediate is a great level after which you will find a lot of interesting things. Therefore, do not turn off the intended path!
    • 11-23 points - Elementary(Base). If you learned English “at school once upon a time”, then in 90% of cases your residual knowledge just reaches the level of Elementary. And this is already a positive moment, since you already have some kind of base and you don’t have to “raise the virgin soil”. At this level, you already know how to read, count up to 100 and know (you can find out in the text) up to 500 words. You are familiar with the basic tenses, you have even heard or know 3 forms of irregular verbs (do-did-done). When building a proposal, you still feel insecure, but you can already order lunch at a restaurant and ask for directions. Cheer up, the most interesting is yet to come.
    • 0-10 points indicates the level beginner (Beginning). In English, you are still a complete beginner, but you will definitely not give up. It is so?

How to check the level of spoken English?

In order to determine the level of knowledge of English online with the greatest accuracy, it is advisable to pass an oral test. After all, knowledge English grammar and vocabulary does not yet guarantee that you have good speech skills and decent pronunciation. Unfortunately, there are also cases when a person passes the test by 90%, but can hardly verbally construct a sentence. Or, when written skills are head and shoulders ahead of oral ones. Such situations occur when a well-motivated person has studied long and hard on his own, read a large number of books, redid hundreds of exercises, but did not have the opportunity or desire to put his skills into practice and talk to someone in a foreign language. It turns out that there is knowledge, but it is impossible to say that a person speaks English. Therefore, if you want to accurately determine your level of knowledge of the English language and get recommendations from a specialist on how to improve it, sign up for free oral testing.

Today our article will be devoted to how to find out the level of language proficiency, and why such knowledge is needed.

How are the levels divided in accordance with the two options adopted by the British Council "British Council" and developed within the framework of the project "Learning Languages for European Citizenship"?

As you already understood, there are traditionally two options, within which you can find out the level of the language. Following the recommendations of the British Council, there are six levels of English proficiency:

  • basic;
  • elementary;
  • pre-intermediate;
  • intermediate;
  • upper-intermediate;
  • advanced.

Each level involves an assessment of knowledge and skills in oral speech, understanding of the material and writing. The elementary level is characterized by the ability to tell minimal information about oneself and others, to solve life situations that have arisen. You should also understand the key expressions that carry the main meaning, and be able to compose a sentence.

With each new level, more and more requirements are added to communication, understanding and writing, as a result of which the student must master the maximum set of knowledge in order to get the highest score. As part of the Upper-Intermediate level, everyone taking the test must be able to use the official language and skillfully manage the informal style; memorize information and be able to retell it; communicate freely with several opponents; understand the speech of the interlocutor on the phone. When reading texts, a person must understand ideas, catch thoughts. Equally important is the ability to write various letters, masterfully coping with grammatical and syntactic constructions.

So, how to determine the level of knowledge of English on the scale of the Council of Europe?

Elementary language skills are represented by two levels - A1 and A2. These levels are considered initial, however, a person who has begun to master foreign language, should already understand some words, ask questions and be able to tell about himself. Often these levels are called levels of survival in a foreign country.

Sufficient language proficiency is considered at two levels - B1 and B2. Within the framework of the first of them, it is necessary to express thoughts in most situations and be able to describe your interests. Level B2 is characterized by the understanding of fairly complex texts. Communication is no longer limited to personality, vocabulary allows you to communicate on abstract topics, when you can skillfully defend your thoughts. The advanced level C1 and C2 are characterized by a complete understanding of what is happening, confident command of the language, regardless of the areas of communication.
